Wicker Dog Crate with Hidden Storage

Posted in Dog beds & crates at 6:38 pm by Pet Luxury

fancy dog crateLooking for a nice dog crate for your pet? One that doesn’t look quite so institutional as those metal and plastic ones available at the pet store?

This furniture-style wicker dog crate might suit your furred friend’s fancy. “If you want to crate-train your dog but don’t like the looks of ordinary metal ones, here’s your solution—a dog house that’s attractive enough to keep in your living room for day-in, day-out use, or outside on your deck or patio. Woven of sturdy two-tone resin wicker that repels water, it won’t absorb doggy odors or fluids and washes clean with just soap and water.”

As a nice bonus, the roof lifts up to reveal a shelf for storage. Finally, the perfect place to hide your pile of dog toys when company is over…

Go Latin with Pet Names

Posted in Trends at 6:34 pm by Pet Luxury

The number of web sites out there devoted to naming dogs, babies, pet rocks, etc. shows that I’m not the only one who ponders deeply on finding the perfect name for a new pet. Oh, sure, you can go with an old stand-by, but if you’re like me, you prefer something unique. Ideally, a pet name should reflect the animal’s personality. If you’d like to add an element of sophistication, try using a latin word for a name.

For example, Fortis means strong. Miles means soldier. Callidus means clever. And Dux means commander (perfect for a headstrong Rottweiler, eh?).

If you’re not up on your Latin, Google “latin english dictionary” or check out this page, which offers a few ideas on latin pet names: Dog Names with Latin Roots

Bags-on-Board Retractable Dog Leash Makes Clean-up Easy

Posted in Dog leashes & collars at 5:09 pm by Pet Luxury

retractable dog leash with bag dispenserYou’re a responsible pet owner, right? When your dog drops a pile in the middle of the sidewalk, you’re there to scoop it into a bag for later disposal, right?

But maybe sometimes you forget to stuff a bag in your pocket before you go out, or maybe you don’t even have a pocket. Wouldn’t it be convenient if the bags just popped out of the dog leash when you need them?

Well, somebody came up with just that idea. The Bags on Board Retractable Leash has a built-in bag dispenser. “Take along a doggie clean-up bag every time you walk your dog with our Bags on Board Retractable Leash. Clean-up bags fit neatly inside the handle, making it more convenient than ever to clean up after your dog.”

Reviews of the leash are positive over at PetCo, where you can purchase the retractable leash for about $20 (and, hey, the first 48 clean-up bags are included).

Pottery Made from Your Horse’s Hair

Posted in Horses at 5:45 pm by Pet Luxury

Pottery Made Using Horse HairThe acute observer will notice this is a picture of a pot and perhaps wonder what it has to do with a blog on pet trends and products.  Well, it’s a pot with horse hair crafted into it.  Specifically, you can have your own horse’s hair worked into the pottery (a few snips from the tail is all it takes).  Those little swirls on the side of the vessel are the remains of hair.

Here are a few details on how it’s done:

“Horsehair pottery is made from a white clay that has been bisque fired to a lower than usual temperature. This leaves the fired clay body quite porous, enabling it to absorb the carbon from burning horse hair. Later, the bisque is warmed up in the kiln to about 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. When it is removed, individual strands of horsehair, preferably from the tail, are laid against the hot surface. If the temperature on the surface of the piece is just right, the hair will attach to the pot, shrivel up, and begin to burn. As the ash forms, a small deposit of carbon and smoke is absorbed into the clay surface, leaving a permanent trace of the horsehair.”

The horsehair pottery is the work of Claypony, where you can order a pot for about $50.
